Choosing the right burglar alarm can be quite daunting, given the wide range of available options. Today, we will examine one of the front-runners in DIY home security systems: the Ring Wireless Burglar Alarm.

As a feature-rich, user-friendly alarm system, the Ring alarm has much to offer. Still, like any product, it also has its drawbacks. Here are 17 things you should consider before purchasing a Ring Wireless Burglar Alarm.

1. What’s in the Ring alarm kit?

Ring offers a comprehensive home security solution, including a base station, keypad, contact sensors, motion detectors, and range extenders. There is a range of kit options with varying numbers of sensors and door contacts.

Compared to some of our other alarm ranges, Ring does not provide a full list of options for alarm accessories. They currently do not offer curtain detectors, shock detectors, flood detectors, etc. They also do not provide a good external motion sensor.

Customers with larger properties would also need to add range extenders which are often not required in, for example, with Visonic Powermaster alarm range.

2. Easy DIY Installation

The Ring alarm is designed for self-installation. You don’t need a professional installer – simply follow the instructions in the Ring app to set up your system.

You would obviously require the relevant tools – drill sets and often forgotten – a tall ladder to install the external siren outside and ‘no fear’ of heights.

Like all decent alarms, most of Ring’s alarm devices do come with anti-tamper parts and you need decent skill sets to ensure you do not break the tampers and end up throwing the damaged devices in the bin.

If you are unsure, you can contact us at FHA and our specialist engineers can come and offer a hassle-free installation service for your Ring alarm system. Further details of FHA Security’s Ring alarm installation service can be found here.

3. Compatibility with Other Ring Devices

If you already use Ring devices (such as the Ring Doorbell or Ring Security Cameras), the Ring Alarm will integrate seamlessly, giving you a unified home security system.

Ring family of alarm and camera products

Please be advised each Ring device adds additional subscription charges and the costs can soon add up.

Our engineers do agree all Ring products are not created equal. While their doorbells are still considered one of the best, the alarm products are not as good, when compared to the competition.

4. Connectivity

The Ring alarm works over Wi-Fi and, for added security, can connect to your Ethernet network. However, some users have reported issues with Wi-Fi connectivity, leading to intermittent loss of service.

If you have a power failure and/or broadband failure, the whole communication with the Ring alarm system fails, including notifying you of the power failure and any burglary attempts.

We always recommend alarms that can offer more than one communication option – so ideally a backup via sim-card GSM units.

5. Amazon Alexa Compatibility

Ring, owned by Amazon, is fully compatible with Amazon Alexa. You can arm, disarm, or check the status of your security system using voice commands.

Ring Alarm Amazon Alexa Connectivity

Please be vary of the hacking risks associated with Amazon Alexa and similar voice-activated devices. There is plenty of news articles advising the risks associated with these devices.

6. Ring Mobile App

The Ring app allows you to monitor and control your security system from anywhere. However, some users have reported that the app can be slow to load, particularly when opening the live view.

Ring Mobile App

7. Subscription Charges

To make full use of Ring’s features, including video recording and sharing, you’ll need a Ring Protect subscription. Prices start at £3.49 per month in the UK. Please check the Ring website for the latest prices. And each additional service or product adds additional charges.

You may also get tired of the constant prompts on the Ring app to upgrade to their subscription plans.

In fairness, most alarm manufacturers started charging for the alarm app connectivity. We still have a range of Visonic Smart Alarms with free apps and Yale Smart Alarms are also available without any app charges. Read about what to consider before buying Yale alarms here.

8. Is Ring Alarm Insurance Approved?

Nope, definitely not! This is the most important aspect to consider before purchasing and installing any make or model of the burglar alarm. DIY alarms by default only meet basic CE ratings for electric/electronic goods and do not comply with the EN-50131 standard required to be accepted as a Grade 2 standard burglar alarm which in turn needs to be fitted by an SSAIB or NSI-approved installer to PD 6662:2017 standard and issue compliance certificate.

If you ticked your box to say you have an alarm and your insurer is expecting an approved alarm with annual maintenance or even police monitoring, be warned, you are likely to see your insurance claim to be rejected in the event of a break-in. If you have been burgled, follow our step-by-step instructions on what to do.

We recently removed a Ring alarm and fitted a new grade 2 alarm for a domestic customer in Watford, after his insurance demanded he needs an insurance-approved alarm at his insurance renewal. He had to get rid of his Ring alarm system.

9. Professional Monitoring (Ring Protect Plus)

For an additional monthly fee, Ring offers 24/7 professional monitoring in the UK. This service will contact emergency services if an alarm is triggered at your home. This is not a Level 1 Police Response Service.

Again, please be advised, this does not still meet standard insurance requirements for monitored alarms. Just like Verisure and SimpliSafe alarms, if your alarm product does not meet the relevant standards, even if your Ring alarm is monitored and even if the monitoring station is accredited, your Ring alarm system does not meet relevant British standards and hence insurance requirements.

You cannot add police response to Ring Alarms and no installer can request a local police service URN with a Ring alarm system. And installers cannot issue NSI or SSAIB certificates to confirm compliance to standards.

This essentially rules out the usage of Ring alarms in business premises, larger homes or properties with valuables in them, houses that have been burgled in the past – due to likely tougher insurance requirements, and buildings in areas with a history of break-ins.

10. Ring Alarm Battery Life

The Ring alarm system is designed for long battery life. However, frequent alarms or poor signal strength may drain the batteries faster than expected.

Our experience is the average battery life of 12 to 18 months with batteries draining first in busier rooms.

Please remember, you will require internal and tall-external ladders, batteries, some basic tools, and delicate hands to replace the batteries without damaging the sensors.

11. Customisable Settings

Ring app is very user-friendly and all settings can be adjusted from the itself. You can easily adjust your Ring alarm settings, such as entry and exit delays, directly from the Ring app.

Compared to this, most professional-grade alarms have an additional layer of protection on programmable settings to ensure untrained end-users do not play around and mess up system configuration.

12. Multiple User Access and Ring Alarm Modes

You can grant access to multiple users, each with their own access code. This feature is handy for families or shared accommodations.

The Ring Alarm offers three security modes: ‘Disarmed’, ‘Home’, and ‘Away’. Each mode provides a different level of protection.

13. False Alarms

Like most DIY alarms, Ring alarms also tend to have more false alarms, compared to professional-grade alarms. We had some customers reporting false alarms, particularly with the motion sensors. Adjusting the sensor sensitivity can help reduce these instances.

If you have active and/or larger pets, or cats in general, it is not recommended to get any DIY alarms, as they all tend to struggle against them.

14. Ring Customer Support

While Ring offers comprehensive online support resources and live customer support, some users have reported long wait times to reach a representative.

If you have a Ring alarm fitted and maintained by FHA, our service plans guarantee same-day resolution to most problems reported. If it requires a site visit, we will ensure you have a temporary reprieve on the same day before an engineer is booked to come out. Talk to us to find out more about our 5-star reviewed, all-inclusive fixed-cost alarm maintenance plans.

15. Environmental Impact

Ring’s packaging is made from responsibly sourced paper. The company also operates a recycling program for old devices, which aligns with UK’s sustainability objectives.

16. Data Privacy

There have been some concerns regarding Ring’s data privacy policies in the past. It’s important to familiarise yourself with these policies and ensure you are comfortable with them before purchasing.

17. Cost

Ring’s wireless alarm systems are on the cheaper end of pricing when compared to other DIY alarms like Yale and are more expensive than some other brands on the market. However, many users feel that the quality and range of features justify the cost. The ability to add multiple Ring products in one app is beneficial, however, not all Ring products are created equal.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the Ring wireless burglar alarm is a versatile, robust system that offers excellent connectivity, expandability, and ease of use. Its wide range of features and device options allow you to customize the system to your specific needs.

However, it’s important to consider factors such as cost, installation difficulty, your DIY skillsets, customer service, data privacy policies, ongoing subscription charges, and your own current and likely future insurance and security requirements when making your decision.

Please ensure you do enough research before spending money on any security solution, and do not make impulse purchases because the product is on sale!  If in doubt, please do get in touch and we, at FHA Security, do offer free commitment-free advice on security. Happy home securing!

Pyronix Alarm Review https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/pyronix-alarm-review/ https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/pyronix-alarm-review/#respond Wed, 24 May 2023 10:57:26 +0000 https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/?p=6381 Pyronix Alarm Review: Everything You Need To Know!

Security is pivotal for both residential and commercial users, and that’s why it’s important to find a quality burglar alarm system for your specific use case. That’s where the Pyronix alarm review comes into play, as we want to see what can this company offer and whether it’s worth your time and money.

We will cover things like their Pyronix alarm installation, and Pyronix alarm service, but also the various models and how feasible they are for you! These days, you always want to ensure that you buy a very good alarm system, one that protects you from burglaries, attacks, and financial losses. Pyronix is a company with a great reputation within the security industry, so this Pyronix review is here to help showcase their products, pros, and cons, as you try to narrow down the best alarm system to fit your needs.

Brief History of the Company

Pyronix is a security company formed in 1986 in Hellaby, Rotherham. The next year they made the smallest PIR at the time, named the Enforcer. Starting with 1991, the company shifted its focus to exports, which managed to enhance export sales from 5% in the previous year to 18%. In 1993, the company started its own Paragon control panel range, many of which are still in use by residential customers, even though it has been discontinued for a long time.

Pyronix has over 35 years of experience in the security industry, and it’s always been a company with a true focus on innovation and creating stellar products. Customer experience is paramount, and that’s why pretty much every Pyronix review you encounter is very positive. It’s a company that has grown and expanded while also offering customers exceptional value and quality for the money.

Pyronix alarms are designed for professional installers and it focuses specifically on the Ireland and UK markets. It is not a DIY product and cannot be attempted for self-installation or maintenance. Pyronix, like many other professional-grade alarm manufacturers, do not offer support to end users.

Pyronix products

Alarms

Home security is paramount for a company like Pyronix, and you can see that from their range of alarm products. Like other professional manufacturers, you have a choice of alarm panels, but also detectors and sensors, sounders and bells, expanders, speech dialers, arming devices, communication devices, and so on. That means you’re pretty much getting the coverage you need, without having to worry about any downsides. Since there’s a good selection of products, you can easily pick the one that fits your needs.

Control panels

Upon starting our Pyronix alarm review, we noticed that the company has a lot of different control panels. Most of their models have wireless support, which means you’ll receive a notification via the app whenever anyone enters your premises. On top of that, you can also disarm the alarm remotely. The Pyronix apps are very impressive and easy to use, which is great since you get to save plenty of time. Plus, the capability of turning things off and setting up remotely offers exceptional benefits, especially if you want to protect your home while you’re away.

Pyronix Alarm Control Panels

There are multiple Pyronix control panel models, like the PCX 78, Enforcer 64, PCX 46 or the Enforcer 32-WE. Ideally, you want to go for a wireless edition because it gives you improved capabilities, more features, and great attention to detail. A Pyronix control panel is also not very expensive, and having the opportunity to control everything from anywhere in the world is very helpful. Every control panel has its own set of zones, independent areas, and plenty of customization options.

Main system range

The Enforcer series has always been synonymous with Pyronix and for a very good reason. This review of Pyronix is more about Pyronix Enforcer review than any other products in their range. These alarm systems are perfect for business and residential customers, and they deliver a two-way system that’s exhaustive and dependable. The system is very easy to install, and there have been 11 different iterations up to this point, with Enforcer 11 being the latest one.

These alarm kits stand out with their focus on wireless features and cloud connectivity, and that’s the reason why an Enforcer Pyronix alarm service is one of the go-to options on the market right now.

Enforcer V11 is the latest iteration and it also has the best and most comprehensive features you could ever need. It has a two-way wireless control panel, built-in Wi-Fi, and it’s also compatible with Android tablets and the Home Control Hub. The unit has multiple simultaneous communication channels and digital WPS support, and it even allows you to select supervision per a specific zone. You can even set timers per zone too, which is very helpful for this product type.

In addition, with Enforcer V11 you have a maximum of 66 total zones, including wired zones as needed. The product also offers 80 user codes, as well as 32 wireless keyfobs, each with its own user ID. Its sensors will sleep automatically when detection is not necessary, which helps preserve battery life. These smart systems help save a significant amount of time, while also making sure your device’s performance is always at its peak.

As a whole in one security platform, Enforcer V11 gives you all the necessary security features, while placing the power in your hand. You also have selectable supervision, multiple communication paths, occupancy detector zones, and many others. That means you’re always in control, and you can choose how to track and monitor security at the highest level. Maybe the major advantage brought by Enforcer V11 is the fact that it has complete support for HomeControl2.0. With its help, you have the opportunity to control your security system remotely. That means fewer worries about your home getting broken into. In addition, you have a voice and push notifications for any event. Enforcer V11 makes it easier than ever to protect your home or office, while still making the entire experience as seamless as possible.

Accessories

During our Pyronix alarm review process, we reviewed the company’s multitude of different accessories. While their Enforcer system is very good on its own, adding some extra features is always helpful. And the accessories you can see here are exceptional, one-of a kind and also extremely useful.

Pyronix Detectors

Some of the most popular accessories are sensors and detectors, mainly because some of them are external. Pyronix accessories can sometimes be pet tolerant, you also have infrared detectors, anti-mask detectors, etc. It’s great to have a large variety of accessories since it’s easier to customize everything according to your requirements.

Another very popular category when it comes to accessories is expanders. You don’t always need to expand your alarm system, but if your home is large, an expander becomes pretty much necessary. They have 8 input expansion modules, 2-way wireless receivers, expander modules with speakers, and even 32 wireless input expanders. It’s a lot easier to narrow things down while finding great expanders that fit your requirements.

Their accessories also include sounders and bells. Again, even if these are not mandatory, they are very durable and high quality, and you’re getting a solid return on investment. You can purchase sound modules, covers for sound modules, but also communication devices. Our Pyronix review experience shows that you can find kits with communication devices already, but it’s possible to purchase a few more separately, especially when it comes to a more complex modem.

Wi-Fi Cameras

Wi-Fi Cameras are very important for both home and business users, and it’s easy to see why. With their help, you can easily track who is entering and exiting your premises. Plus, many of these cameras come with a low profile, so they are hard to see. Pyronix has a great LightCamera which is their outdoor light camera. The company also creates a BatteryCam, which offers video monitoring and movement detection in a single product.

Pyronix Wi-Fi Cameras

They also offer a Doorbell Cam which is great at helping you see who is at the door. It’s easier to know whether you will actually answer that person or not. That can go hand in hand with the Doorbell Chine, which is a sounder with very good audio coverage. Maybe the most interesting and different type of product in this category is the Solar Panel.

Please note, any Pyronix Wi-Fi camera’s performance is dependent on the Wi-Fi signal strength, the location of the camera, your wifi speed, and the overall quality of their servers and mobile apps.

Android Tablet

One of the most interesting products that Pyronix offers is its Android Tablet. This is a part of the Enforcer V11 Security System. It’s fully compatible with the Home Control Hub, and on top of that, you can easily mount it on the wall. Either that, or you can use it as a mobile device and access it from anywhere in your home.

Pyronix Android Tablet

You can acquire the tablet separately, or you can get it within the Enforcer Tablet Kit 2. The kit has an Enforcer V11 wireless control panel, the Android Tablet, but also 2 pet immune PIR detectors, a nano-size contact, etc. You can also access PyronixCloud which is a subscription plan that helps optimize and automate your security via cloud solutions.

Whether you choose the complete system with the tablet or you buy it separately, there’s no denying that the tablet is extremely helpful. You can easily customize every aspect of your security, set alarms, automate tasks and switch devices on or off. One of the most impressive features is undoubtedly its live video feed, where you can see up to 16 different cameras at once on a single device.

Pyronix App

Aside from the Pyronix alarm installation, it’s very important to have great software, and the company does not disappoint. They have ProControl+, which is an app for approved Pyronix installers. There’s also Pyronix Cloud we mentioned earlier, which helps connect smart devices and security systems while monitoring and tracking them from a single place.

Pyronix App - Home Control 2.0

But the most interesting app is the Home Control 2.0 app for end-users. The app has biometric login, geofencing, voice notifications, event history, SmartPlug compatibility, remote monitoring, etc. You can also arm or disarm the app from anywhere you want, and it helps deliver a great way to use your Pyronix alarm system at your own pace.

Positives

1. Ability to connect with Hikvision CCTV

Pyronix products offer you compatibility with some versions of Hikvision CCTV, which is great because it allows you to integrate CCTV within your security system and view the footage from the same app.

2. Established UK brand, now owned by Hikvision

The company has been around for decades, and they are widely known for their durable, comprehensive security systems. Even if they are under Hikvision ownership, the company is still among the best alarm system providers in the UK and Ireland.

Negatives

1. Dated-looking panels and accessories

One of Pyronix’s downsides is the overall design of its systems. Their accessories and panels don’t have a modern look, some might even consider their look dated. The Pyronix Enforcer panel v11 looks just like a 10-year-old older version of the same alarm and it is bad compared to some of the latest panels and keypads in the market from competitors.

2. Ongoing app charges

The Pyronix apps are great, but the problem is they offer via a subscription. That means you’re dealing with constant app charges. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it adds extra costs to the overall maintenance and usability of your system. In fairness, most manufacturers who offer quality ongoing app connectivity charge some kind of subscription these days. Visonic is the only exception still with their Powermaster series.

3. Need for professional installation and service

You can’t install Pyronix alarm systems on your own, you need to hire a professional for servicing and installation. That’s the case for most alarm systems these days, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind.

Should you consider buying a Pyronix alarm system?

As you can see from our Pyronix alarm review, the company has a rich history in the world of alarms. They are very innovative, professional and always come up with new features that help their clients. In addition, they evolved quite a lot on the software side, offering customers the best way to monitor and manage each one of their tools at their convenience.

Pyronix is an excellent model of alarm to consider especially for residential customers. We would definitely shortlist it among some of the more popular products out there. We will also compare them against other products in the market from Risco, Visonic, etc. There are cheaper options with similar features and more advanced systems with better user experience currently available in the market.

Finally, the home security solutions are for residential users looking for an easy-to-use, convenient, and reliable security system.

Here are the most popular alarm products of Risco Group among all the categories:

Features And Accessories Of Risco Alarms

What are the common things among all the Risco solutions? Or it would be more appropriate if we say what the common features of all solutions offered by Risco Group are. The Risco alarm review will be incomplete if we don’t discuss the following features and accessories of the security solutions:

Risco Alarm App Review

When the Risco security systems are marketed or advertised, Risco App controls your security alarm system is the most prominent highlight.

Why?

It makes your security system a complete home automation system that you can control right on your palm. iRisco is the mobile application for Risco security systems, and it turns a security system into a smart home.

iRisco Smart Alarm App from Risco
iRisco Smart Alarm App from Risco

Risco app allows you to receive real-time video and image notifications from your property, arm or disarm your property right from the mobile app, and a lot of functionality features to empower the property owner.

The most enticing functionalities of the iRisco app are as follows:

  1. You can bypass one or more detectors to avoid false alarms. For instance, if you left some window of your property open, you can simply bypass that detector when arming the rest.
  2. There is the option of group arming, which allows you to arm or disarm a designated group of detectors. For instance, if you want to arm first-floor detectors, you can use group arming.
  3. If you’ve security systems of Risco group installed at more than one property, you won’t need different devices for remote control. Instead, the multi-panel feature of the iRisco app allows you to manage different security systems conveniently.

Risco VUpoint Cameras Review

Yet another feature or innovation of Risco Group that has been making highlights for a long time is the Vupoint IP cameras installed in the security systems of Risco Group. So the Risco Group has been using WiFi and PoE cameras with high resolution of up to 4 MP.

With PoE and WiFi cameras, consumers can save themselves from the hassle of installing CCTV cameras. PoE cameras are IP cameras that use a single ethernet cable for network access and electric power. WiFi cameras use the cloud server to transmit or stream the footage. You can add as many PoE cameras to your systems as you want without any complicated installation.

  • Bullet PoE 4MP
  • Cube PoE 4MP
  • EyeBall PoE 4MP
  • 4MP VF Bullet PoE
  • 4MP Dome PoE
  • 4MP 25x PTZ

Types Of Detectors Used In Risco Alarm Systems

The next main highlight of Risco security solutions is the wide range of safety detectors and sensors the security systems are equipped with. The users can add or leave certain detectors according to their specific needs.

Risco wired and wireless detectors
Risco’s choice of detectors

The types of detectors and sensors are as follows:

  • Wireless PIR Detectors like Watchout PIR, curtain sensors, 2-way wireless PET, and PIR sensors for accurate detection and prevention of false alarms

  • Glass breaker detectors
  • Vibration detectors for seismic vibrations, shocks, etc
  • Sounders
  • Shock and Contact detectors like wireless windows & doors contact, 2-way wireless magnetic or multi-function contact detectors, etc.
  • Keypads and Kefobs
  • Indoor detectors
  • Outdoor detectors
  • Pet detectors
  • Commercial and industrial detectors for advanced needs

Positives Of Risco Alarms

We have already talked about the main highlights and features of Risco alarms and security solutions. But when a buyer is considering buying an alarm system, he will want a Risco alarm review telling why Risco Group is the better choice. So here are the positives of Risco alarms:

Great App

We won’t need to debate more about the capabilities and functionalities of the Risco mobile app or VUpoint Desktop app for camera streaming and control. The mobile app of Risco alarms synchronizes with all security solutions and turns a simple security system into a complete smart home. Whether you want to check history logs and past events or arm/disarm specific zones or detectors, the iRisco app can entertain you.

Best Budget Smart Alarm

Risco’s WiComm Pro is one of the best smart alarms for residential and small commercial installations in its price range.

Video and Image Control Over Security System

Vupoint Desktop app paired up with the PoE and WiFi cameras of high resolutions makes any security solution of Risco Group better than market competitors. With a home security solution or office security system from Risco Group, you can get access to live video streaming.

You can also get video & image notifications on your mobile app, as well as access the recordings of camera footage via the Risco Cloud server. Together, these functionalities give you better control over your security system.

Great hybrid alarm – Lightsys system

Whether you have an old wired alarm that needs replacing or upgrading to something new, Risco’s Lightsys is the only viable option to use existing cabling or even have a wired smart alarm installed.

With demand for wired alarms almost non-existent, most burglar alarm manufacturers have discontinued their wired range completely and stopped supporting their legacy wired systems.

Risco Lightsys 2 allows the system to be fully or partially wired, also allowing for wireless devices to be added, ideal for expanding legacy systems by adding new wireless devices.

Negatives Of Risco Alarms

The Risco alarm review won’t be complete if we don’t highlight the downsides or shortcomings of Risco alarms. So here are some negatives about the Risco Group and their solutions:

No End-User Support

Like most professional-grade alarms, Risco systems are only sold through their approved installers, and manufacturers’ support is only given to certified installers. While this can be annoying, it is a standard practice in the industry and Risco’s products are not designed to be installed or maintained by end users.

Luckily, at FHA Security, our team of engineers is trained and certified for all Risco products and has been working on Risco’s range of products for over a decade.

Systems Only Suitable For Small And Medium Spaces

The security solutions developed and manufactured by Risco Group are not a good fit for very large spaces or buildings. The alarm systems are sufficient to provide comprehensive security to small and medium-sized properties. You might consider moving to other options if you want a large-scale security system to cover large spaces.

No Free Add-On Services (Previously Free Of Charge)

The iRisco app for Risco alarm systems was a free-of-charge cloud service from Risco to work as a remote control for alarm systems. However, since 2020 this is now a chargeable service, which upset many customers.

In fairness, Risco does have its reasons for doing this.

  1. A cloud-connected service requires a well-maintained and secure server.
  2. Securing and maintaining such a system is expensive
  3. A cloud connection is an ongoing service.
  4. Most manufacturers now charge for their cloud services.
  5. Paying for a service like this is better than finding out the manufacturer has completely shut down such a service, rendering your smart system, well, not so smart!
  6. Risco systems allow installers to remotely work on, service, and troubleshoot problems on systems saving time and money and allowing speedier service.
  7. Risco’s app is the only Secured by Design-approved app for security systems.

Should You Consider Buying Risco Alarm System?

Despite all the alluring accessories, capabilities, and features of a security system, an end consumer is most concerned about only one question: should I consider buying the product?

So in the case of Risco alarms, we have a complete Risco alarm review in front of you. We dissected each alarm system into separate reviews: Agility 4 review, LightSYS 2 review, and Wicomm Pro review.

But if we have to answer the question of if Risco alarms are worth considering, the answer is here:

The security solutions of Risco Group are reliable and affordable. Therefore, if you are looking for affordable security solutions for your home or small offices, there is no harm in considering Risco. However, if you want advanced solutions for the complex security needs of big infrastructures, you will need to find other options!

If you are looking for a quote for a fully customised Risco alarm, or not sure which model of Risco alarm to choose, or have a Risco alarm that you need help with, please do give us a call at FHA Security and we will be happy to help.

Texecom Alarm Review: Everything You Need To Know! https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/texecom-alarm-review/ https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/texecom-alarm-review/#comments Tue, 21 Feb 2023 21:29:12 +0000 https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/?p=6345 Texcom Alarm Review
Texecom Alarm Review from FHA Security

Texecom is one of the largest independent security system and intruder alarms specialist. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Texecom has emerged as one of the largest security system specialists in Europe and has a considerable share of the global security market, especially in commercial intruder alarm markets.

Today, we will guide you about the alarm systems of Texecom and which Texecom intruder alarm you should go with. We will also highlight the shortcomings and best features of Texecom burglar alarms so you should know which system meets your requirements comprehensively.

So let’s get into it.

Texecom Intruder Alarms

As highlighted, Texecom is one of the largest companies in the security systems industry, and so are the Texecom intruder alarms. Texecom has different types of burglar alarm panels that address the needs of various properties and users.

The company has both wired and wireless security systems according to the customers’ needs. Premier Elite and Veritas are two series of Texecom intruder alarms, and each system meets international security standards.

Premier Elite

Premier Elite series of Texecom burglar alarms have a range of panels that address the concerns of business users as well as homeowners looking to get the system installed at their properties. Premier Elite is the most advanced series of the company’s alarm systems that features Ricochet wireless technology.

All burglar alarms of the Premier Elite series have a unified & comprehensive system architecture that can fulfill the needs of customers having a small installation area to complex needs like businesses. However, the cost of the Premier Elite can be on the higher side as compared to other alarms and panels. It is because the system is comprehensive to provide you with full home automation rather than just a security system.

The main burglar alarms and panels in the Premier Elite series are as follows:

  1. Premier Elite 640
  2. Premier Elite 168
  3. Premier Elite 88
  4. Premier Elite 64-W Live
  5. Premier Elite 64-W
  6. Premier Elite 48
  7. Premier Elite 24
  8. Premier Elite 24(Polymer)
Texecom Alarm Control Panels

Veritas

The Veritas series of Texecom intruder alarms might not be as popular as the Premier Elite, but the series has been in the market for many years. Veritas R8 and R8 Plus are the most popular alarm panels of the series.

Some of the Veritas series alarm systems fall in the Grade 1 Class II system category that complies with British Standards PD6662: 2017 of the security systems, instead of Grade 2 and upwards which is a requirement for most insurance-approved alarms.

Besides, some of the alarm systems and panels in the Veritas series are popular as DIY alarm systems that are easy to operate and fix. Even more, the series is for users looking for a more affordable home or business alarm system. Make sure your alarm panel meets the standards you may require for monitoring or police response requirements.

The main alarm systems in the Veritas series are as follows:

  1. Veritas Excel
  2. Veritas R8 Plus
  3. Veritas R8
  4. Veritas 8 Compact
  5. Veritas 8

Features Of Texecom Intruder Alarms

Regardless of which series and which panel you order for installation at your property, here are the main features and capabilities inherent to Texecom intruder alarms:

Control Panel Accessories

When you order a Texecom burglary alarm, you get an accessory of scalability, making these security systems fit for a small home to a big office. The Premier Elite series of Texecom has the capability of multiple zone expanders and a unified programming platform that can control & manage numerous peripheral devices without any hassle. You also get the option of a wide range of connectors and converters to have a smooth installation & usage experience of the Texecom alarm systems.

The largest panel supports up to 640 zones!

Texecom Keypads - Premier Elite Keypad and Ricochet Wireless Keypad
Texecom Keypads

Motion Detectors

If we talk about a sound alarm system, motion detection is the most significant aspect that decides the efficiency of a security system. And when it comes to Texecom alarm systems, they have motion detectors with good catch performance.

The motion detector technology of Texecom is characterized by decent PIR sensors, EN50131-2 certification, and flicker-free detections due to the superior performance of microwave detections. Microwave motion detection also reduces the disturbance caused due to fluorescent lights on your property.

For more accuracy, the customers also have the choice of detection mode among DT (PIR & Microwave detection for maximum performance), PW(Petwise) on properties prone to pet intrusion, and CW (Clockwise) for enhanced performance.

Ricochet Wireless Technology

Ricochet wireless system also has self-healing functionality in case the connection between two devices weakens due to an interruption in the signaling route. The other features of Ricochet-enabled wireless security systems include two-way communication between devices & control systems as well as mesh networks to support several wireless devices for a comprehensive security system.

Digital Services For Value Addition

Digital services of Texecom alarm systems are yet another add-on you can get to control your home’s security better. The Texecom SmartCom communicators allow the users to connect the Texecom intruder alarms with the digital services of Texecom via WiFi, Mobile Data(4G), or Ethernet, according to your convenience.

Texecom Cloud

The Texecom cloud account allows the customers to have a remote management system or Texcom Connect to control the security system installed on their property. Yet another digital service of Texecom is Texecom Monitor, which integrates seamlessly with the Premier Elite series for simpler & quick alarm communications.

Compliance With International Security Standards

The company has a clean chit if we talk about the compliance of Texecom intruder alarms with international and UK security standards. Most of the intruder alarms and security systems of Texecom meet commercial-grade wireless technology as well as the highest standards of the UK security system requirements.

Is Texecom Alarm any good?

It depends on who you ask and what the system is used for! Let us look at some of the good features of the system.

Positives of Texecom Intruder Alarms

Tailored Security Systems

The first good thing about the alarm systems of Texecom is that the company has tailored solutions for different types of users and security needs. From motion detectors to peripheral devices and technology to tailored to high-end and large property installations, Texecom allows customers to design their security system.

Texecom Connect App

Like all other manufacturers, Texecom has pivoted towards smart connectivity with Texecom Connect app to allow 24/7 control and convenience to access your alarm system directly from your mobile phone or tablet. You can manage who can access your security system, adjust the system settings, and even have real-time access to your property via cameras. The Texecom Connect app makes the company’s security systems provide a better experience and smarter homes & business premises.

Installation

Being considered a professional-grade alarm, Texecom alarms are recommended and fitted by approved Installers with experience in the product range.

Shortcomings Of Texecom Intruder Alarms

Some of the shortcomings we have found with Texecom intruder alarms and those reported by our customers are as follows:

False Triggers

A problem customers report is the false alarm triggers when a pet of over 25 kg moves around the property. The Petwise motion detection mode of Texecom promises correct detection for up to 35 kg weighing pets. However, the customer feedback says otherwise about the claims made by the company.

Battery Outage

Some users have also reported issues with the security system’s battery which completely goes out if there is a power outage of anywhere between 2 hours to 3 hours. The main system battery is not chargeable and goes completely flat in case of a power outage. It means you will have additional expenses every now and then if your property faces frequent power outages.

Need a Professional Team Of Engineers

Most of the alarm systems of Texecom are not DIY, and you will need professionals to take care of installation, servicing, and fixing any issues. So if you have been looking for a DIY alarm system, look at options other than Texecom.

There are fewer engineers who work on old fashioned wired alarms than before and that brings its own challenges to the industry and particularly to products like Texecom.

As a professional installation company that deals with over 40 products, we looked at Texecom 3-4 times over the last decade or so, and opted not to take on Texecom alarms. One reason was a lack of a wireless keypad to go with wireless alarm systems and the number of years it took for them to release the product.

Over-specification

Considering most Texecom products have focused on their wired product range for commercial and large installations with sometimes up to 640 zones, we often find high-end Texecom products are over-specified for smaller properties and residential customers.

Aesthetics

With most consumers, end-users, and manufacturers focusing on the user interface, look and feel of products, Texecom alarm panels, keypads, and accessories come across as outdated and perhaps a decade behind, compared to some of the more stylish products from the likes of Qolsys and similar products we currently offer.

What to do with your existing Texecom Alarm?

Already have an old Texecom alarm that needs fixing or upgrading? Our team at FHA Security has considerable experience in upgrading old wired Texecom alarms to something modern. We can upgrade using existing devices in your alarm, or by using some of the existing cabling,s or into something completely new, like a smart wireless alarm with home automation capabilities.

Final Words

This is an independent Texecom alarm review based on the expertise of some of our security professionals and engineers who has knowledge of the system. Besides, we have also factored in the customer feedback and reviews of Texecom alarm users to give you honest advice about security alarms.

If you are considering a new alarm system, you should definitely shortlist it for high-end commercial installations and for residential or smaller commercial sites, there are plenty of smarter, easier-to-use, and better-suited products out there.

Visonic PowerMaster 30 Alarm – Everything you need to know! https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/visonic-powermaster-30-alarm-everything-you-need-to-know/ https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/visonic-powermaster-30-alarm-everything-you-need-to-know/#respond Wed, 30 Nov 2022 09:40:16 +0000 https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/?page_id=6194 Visonic Powermaster 30 Burglar Alarm - Everything you need to know!
Visonic Powermaster 30 Wireless Burglar Alarm

Security systems and burglar alarms effectively prevent any mishap like fire, burglary, or a medical emergency. Over 40% of UK households have installed any form of a burglar alarm. We can estimate the effectiveness of burglar alarms and security systems because 9 out of 10 burglars prefer to target a property with no burglar alarm or security.

Different brands manufacture wired and wireless security systems and alarms. Undoubtedly Visonic has been making a big difference in the industry with its cutting-edge technology and security systems. The company has wired(older versions) and wireless(battery-powered newer models) burglar alarms.

Without going into the comparison, wireless alarms are more affordable, easy to install, and convenient to use than wired ones. Visonic Powermaster 30 alarm is also a wireless security system for commercial and residential consumers. In today’s article, we are going to talk about Visonic Powermaster 30 Alarm and everything you need to know about this security system.

History Of Visonic

Firstly, let’s talk a bit about the history of Visonic, the company behind the unbeatable security systems and alarms. Moshe and Yaacov Kotlicki established Visonic in 1973. The Israel-based company started operations as a high-quality electronic security systems and components manufacturer.

It took 3 decades until the firm became a public limited company and got listed on the London Stock Exchange (main list) in 2004. After its international recognition, it took two years to get listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) in 2006.

In 2011, Tyco International Inc. acquired Visonic for $100 million, which is now a private company. Since the acquisition, Visonic has never looked back and has kept expanding the brand’s product portfolio. The company, headquartered in Kiryat Gat, Israel, has sales in more than 100 countries, including Africa, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South & North America.

The company currently has 90 registered patents and 40 patent applications under examination. The cutting-edge technology paired with revolutionary designs has enabled the company to develop and manufacture the highest quality security systems for all consumers worldwide! And there is indeed more to come.

PowerMaster Range And PowerMaster 30

Powermaster Range of Visonic is the most successful product line with advanced features. All the products of the PowerMaster Family use cutting-edge PowerG wireless network technology.

Whether the residential or commercial needs, the products of the Powermaster family are robust and reliable wireless solutions comparable to wired security systems. The PowerMaster range include the following control panels working using the same family of PowerG wireless sensors.

Visonic Powermaster Control Panels 10, 30, 33, 360R and Qolsys
Visonic Powermaster Series Control Panels

PowerMaster-30 G2 is a wireless security alarm system equipped with advanced security alarms. The advanced monitoring applications, superior range, and wireless robustness are the features that make it an outstanding security alarm for professional use.

The IFSEC International Security Industry Award Winner product of Visonic has 64 zones and innovatory PowerG network technology. PowerMaster 30 operates on non-chargeable batteries, and you can stay connected 24/7.

Key Features

Let’s talk about the key features of the PowerMaster 30 Alarm:

Visonic Powermaster 30 Burglar Alarm fitted and serviced by FHA Security
Visonic PowerMaster 30 Burglar Alarm Fitted to PD 6662:2017 standard by FHA Security

1.    Grade 2 EN 50131 standard

Grade 2 EN 50131 standard for Intruder Alarm Systems is the maximum grading for burglary alarms operating on wireless technology. The standard was introduced in 1997 and then updated in 2006 to further describe the system requirements for the alarms. EN 50131 satisfies the need to prevent a robbery from burglars having specialised knowledge and expertise in security alarms.

Visonic PowerMaster G-30 satisfies the European Grade 2 EN 50131 standard. Therefore, it is a perfect alarm system for your residential and commercial property, whether you want to secure your place from external intruders or take care of disabled/elderly family members and children.

2.    2-way Communication PowerG Sensors

Visonic PowerMaster 30 features PowerG sensors that are undoubtedly the most popular for the level of security, wireless range, and two-way communications. The military-grade 128-bit AES encryption sensors have a wireless range of around 2000 feet. It means the PowerMaster 30 is able to cover large areas without repeaters.

The two-way communication between the alarm panel and PowerG Sensor enables adaptive transmission. It implies that the sensor can adapt the outgoing signal to reach the panel without expending too much energy. Besides, your system can also report faults more quickly to the monitoring stations.

3.    Smart capabilities – GSM and IP Modules

GSM/GPRS and IP modules can be integrated into PowerMaster 30 and placed inside the panel. The GSM unit with the alarm system allows you to receive notifications via SMS and calls from the GSM sim card placed inside the control panel. The alarm can send notifications to 4 pre-selected telephone numbers you feed into your panel.

Additionally, IP modules make it a contemporary smart alarm system remote control via Visonic-Go mobile phone app for iOS and Android devices. The VisonicGo app allows remote arming and disarming, checking system status, and receiving system notifications via the app.

Both GSM and IP modules as well as other dedicated communication modules could be used for third-party monitoring and police response for the alarm system.

4.    Landline connected calling features- how to upgrade it

PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) is a telecommunication network that enables voice communications in your alarm system. When your system is using the PSTN, it uses your landline to communicate with you and the monitoring station if the alarm is triggered.

Visonic PowerMaster 30 has a PSTN module built-in and this calling features you can rely on for event reporting. Even you can capitalise on the landline calling for automatic prompts of different events.

Please be advised, the UK is digitising all its landlines and is discontinuing analogue landlines by 2025, so this functionality will come to end soon. You can read more about this update here. We can either add a GSM module for you to continue to receive notifications from the alarm using a sim card inside the panel or add an IP module for smart app connectivity.

5.    BS8243 Compliance

As already mentioned, the PowerMaster 30 of Visonic complies with BS8243 which translates to the British standard for the design, installation, and configuration of security alarm systems. BS8243-compliant alarm systems are better enabled to recognise the risk of false alarms. In essence, such alarm systems have better confirmation technology.

Please be advised, the system will need to be installed to PD 6662:2017 standards by a SSAIB or NSI certified company and issue the certificate to get the benefit of any insurance discounts.

6.    Multiple Arming Zones

There are 64 detector zones, and you can set the name and number of each detector zone. Each zone relates to a sensor in a particular area of the property. You can set up the arming zones to notify you whenever a sensor in a particular area gets triggered.

7.    System Monitoring and Control

With all the PowerMaster products, you get total control from the central monitoring station. You can remotely control the panel for arming and disarming and perform wireless connection diagnostics. You do not need any hardware switches or manual opening of peripherals as they are directly configured from the panel.

8. Wide choice of internal and perimeter sensors.

Powermaster range has the full range of internal sensors available for most commercial and residential applications. The range includes full range of door contacts (MC-309, MC302V, MC-302, and MC-303), Motion Detector MP-802, Curtain PIR Detector, Shock Detector SD-304, Ceiling mount wireless detectors MP-862 and MP872, Glass Breaker detector GB-502, Dual tech sensors Tower-32AM and Tower-30AM.

Full range of Visonic Powermaster Burglar alarm accessories
Sample of Accessories for Visonic Powermaster Alarm

9. Camera Sensors

Once an IP module or GSM module is inserted, you have the choice to add motion sensors with built-in cameras to any Powermaster alarm. If the alarm is activated, the camera PIRs can take pictures and send them to your app, enabling you to visually confirm a break-in. This allows you to call the police in a real break-in and ignore the alarm notification if it is your family member setting the alarm off accidentally.

10. External Sensors

Powerful external sensors from Visonic allow for enhanced perimeter protection. These are Tower-20 AM PG2 external sensor, Tower-20 CAM PG2 Camera external sensor, Outdoor Magnetic contact MC-312, and outdoor Curtain PIR Detector MP-902 PG2. These strategically placed external sensors enable intruder detection even before anyone approaches the property and damage any doors or windows.

11. Other Accessories

Additionally, there are many arming stations available, ranging from the basic wireless keypad (KP-241) to the elegant touchscreen keypads (KP-160 and KP-250), as well as proximity tags and remote control key fobs (KF-234 and KF-235).

Additionally, there are smoke detectors, smoke and heat detectors, flood detectors, and temperature detectors.

There is also a choice of internal and external sirens.

Visonic also provides repeaters to increase wireless range, however, they are rarely needed, unless in a large-scale industrial installation.

Service and Maintenance

We already talked about the main highlights and key features of PowerMaster 30, making it a competitive alarm system even in 2022. Whether you have installed the Visonic PowerMaster 30 at your home or in your office, you must know about the service and maintenance of the alarm system.

So here is everything you need to know about the maintenance of your already installed PowerMaster 30.

Please be advised, Powermaster 30 is a professional-grade alarm system and it is NOT designed for end-user service. The system meets the highest standards for anti-tamper and anti-masking and often, untrained people damage it while improperly servicing the system.

The following information should only be used as a general guideline; if you encounter any system errors, please contact your certified Visonic installer for assistance. If you do not have an installer, we will be happy to assist you.

1.     Recommended Frequency – Annual Service

Although the PowerMaster 30 is a highly advanced wireless alarm control system to secure your property and gives you better control over your home. However, regardless of how good, every system needs maintenance and servicing at regular intervals.

When it comes to Visonic Alarm PowerMaster 30, if it has third-party monitoring with police response, it is mandatory to get your alarm system serviced every 6 months to make sure that everything is working perfectly. However, if you do not have a police response, then you should get it serviced once a year.

Besides, you should also make sure to test your alarm system for any faults or issues at least once a month. This practice will help you locate and fix the faults and risks before they become a real problem. The tests you can conduct on your own are conducted in four parts: siren test, temperature sensor test, all devices tests, and other device tests.

2.     Common Faults

Here is the list of common faults and quick fixes for your Visonic alarm system:

2.1. Powermaster trouble warning

In general, when there is a problem with the configuration of the control panel, battery consumption increases abruptly, or a device or detector stops reporting to the control panel for a period of time, it results in an error display.

In the first two cases, the fault is 1-Way. When a device is unable to be detected by the control panel, it shows the error MISSING. To fix a 1-WAY fault, make sure to check your device is physically present and has enough battery charging. If both conditions are fulfilled, it could be faulty, and you need to contact your Visonic Service Team.

The engineer will run a diagnosis, and try to replace the device and battery depending on the results of quick fixes.

2.2. Alarm in memory

In case when you see the error message stating Not Ready to Arm – Alarm In Memory, it is normal to panic for a moment as you are getting late to reach somewhere. However, it is the time when you have to dig a bit and locate the actual problem. It can be due to an alarm, wireless siren, live failures, or CPU failure. You will need the assistance of your Visonic Service Team.

2.3.  Tamper warning

CPU TAMPER is an error your panel shows when a related problem appears. It indicates anything related to the panel’s battery, battery lid, or any changes to the panel. CPU TAMPER is the standard message you will see, meaning physical tampering with the control panel or when its cover is opened. The error also suggests that the panel is removed from the wall.

We strongly advise against attempting to solve this yourself since you risk damaging the Powermaster 30 control panel’s tamper, which would require you to replace the control panel and reprogram all of the sensors into the new panel.

2.4.  Low battery warning

CPU LOW BATTERY is the message you will see when there is a problem with the panel’s battery. Either the battery is weak, or it needs to be replaced. To fix the problem, consider checking the AC power availability to the panel. If the problem doesn’t go away after 72 hours, it’s time to replace the battery pack of your control panel.

An error message ‘LOW BATTERY’ can also indicate a problem with the battery of sensors, wireless commander, or keyfob. Replace the battery of devices in case of non-rechargeable batteries. Otherwise, check the AC Power supply and connectivity to the respective devices.

2.5.  No power on the panel

AC FAILURE is the error message when the control panel is not connected to the AC power and is running on the backup batteries. All you need to do to fix the problem is connect the AC power supply to the control panel.

To do so, connect the power cable and close the control panel. If you are not sure about it, you can always call your Visonic Service Team to be on your side for quick resolution of the faults and errors.

This could also be caused by a failed transformer in the control panel that may need replacing. In such cases, your Visonic Service Team will be able to replace it and get the system working again.

2.6.  Communication failure

The communication failure errors of the Visonic PowerMaster 30 can be of many types and can be indicated by different codes and error messages.

2.6.1. Jamming

A radio-frequency signal blocks the communication channel of sensors and control panels.

2.6.2. Not Networked

Incorrect installation of a device, failure to establish communication between sensors and control panels, or no installation at all.

2.6.3. Line Failure

It represents a problem with the telephone line. The panel is not able to detect line voltage on the PSTN module.

2.6.4. RSSI Low

The GSM communicator is experiencing a weak mobile network signal.

2.7.  PowerMaster 30 Code Reset

If you have a Visonic Powermaster 30 alarm and do not know the user code, master code, and/or engineer’s code, you will need to contact FHA Security. As a Visonic specialist company, our engineers are trained and certified by Visonic to reset the system and generate new codes for your alarm.

Qolsys – The Most Advanced Smart Alarm Right Now! https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/qolsys-smart-alarm-review/ https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/qolsys-smart-alarm-review/#comments Wed, 09 Nov 2022 21:32:49 +0000 https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/?p=6168 Video surveillance systems, alarm systems, and access control systems are the future of homes and commercial security. The surveillance systems increase your home’s security and reduce property-related crimes when used by most people in a town or city with high crime rates. In fact, these systems have emerged as the need for homes where both partners are working professionals.

Home security systems usually consist of doors and windows sensors, control panels, motion sensors(interior and exterior), sirens and alarms for emergencies, yard signs, wired and wireless security cameras, and more.

Visonic and Qolsys were two names, international developers and manufacturers of high-quality home security products and systems. Johnsons Controls owns both companies and is the market leader in the related industry.

Today, we are going to talk about Visonic Qolsys IQ Panel, an advanced home security system for residential consumers. It is a complete review to unfold the benefits and features of Qolsys IQ Panel as the best home automation system.

So let’s get into it.

What Is Qolsys IQ Panel?

Qolsys IQ Panel is an all-in-one home security panel, and it is one of the most advanced Smart Security and Home Automation solutions available to UK citizens. Quality of Life Systems(Qolsys) is the most renowned manufacturer of automated security systems and home alarms.

The IQ Panel 2+ is an exceptional alarm panel that features advanced sensors, high-level encrypted security, and integration with Visonic Powermaster wireless burglar alarm technology. Whether you are concerned about the external security of your garage, doors, and windows or want an interior smart home system, IQ Panel 2+ is the solution you need to have.

The company explains the IQ Panel as the Swiss army knife of alarm panels, and this is undoubtedly an undisputable fact about the best home automation system. The sleek design, easy-to-use interface, Qualcomm Snapdragon SOC, and Visonic wireless alarm technology are the main highlights of the Qolsys alarm kit.

Features Of Qolsys IQ Panel

Let’s talk about the Qolsys IQ panel’s features to see how this home alarm system helps residential users.

Visonic Qolsys IQ Panel key features include 6 wireless technologies, dual path connectivity, built in camera to name a few.
Visonic Qolsys IQ – 2 Panel Key Features

1.    Backup Battery

The home automation system features a 3200 ah Lithium polymer battery that keeps the home alarm kit on. Besides, the home automation system and alarm kit also have a backup battery to keep the device and panel working even when there are power failures. The backup battery also warns about power failures.

2.    Insurance Approved

The standard warranty of the Qolsys IQ Panel installed by FHA Security is 1 year. However, you get an extended 10 years unlimited warranty with the maintenance plan of FHA security. Besides the warranty and maintenance, the Qolsys IQ Panels are also insurance approved under EN 50131 Standard of British Standard Grade 2 Certified System. It is the common insurance requirement, and the insurance signifies the compatibility of the home alarm kit and automation system with the needs of UK residents.

3.    Qualcomm Snapdragon SOC

If we talk about the processor of IQ Panel has Qualcomm Snapdragon SOC. It is a high-performance IoT system-on-chip with features like machine learning, sensor processing, integrated wireless connectivity, voice UI enablement, and edge computing.

In general, alarm panel systems add functions like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular network, etc., to the system chips. However, in the case of IQ Panel 2+, the Qualcomm Snapdragon SOC brings the in-built functionalities right on the panel’s brain(processor).

The highly powerful processor is good from the customer’s perspective as it eliminates the gap in understanding the user interface of home security panels. Why? The Qualcomm Snapdragon SOC makes the IQ Panel work like a mobile device or tablet; easy to interact with and use.

4.    Large Display With Touch Screen

A 7-inches large display with a touch screen is large enough whether you are using the camera, trying to access security camera footage, or performing other tasks on the best home automation system. The sleek design of the large display brings ease to reading notifications and messages and access to other features from the panel.

5.    High-Quality Sensors

If we talk about the sensors, the high-quality sensors have two-way communication enabled. The sensors can send or receive information from the exterior and interior of your property to give you higher control and access to sensors. Even you can capitalize on the smartphone app of Qolsys to control the sensors.

All the sensors are pre-installed on the chip, and you don’t have to spend money on additional sensors or parts. It is a great solution to replace your old sensors and use the integrated all-in-one IQ Panel as the best home automation system.

6.    5 MP Camera

The panel has a high-quality 5 MP in-built camera that has several features and functionalities. You can set the panel to take pictures every time it is disarmed and share the pictures to your phone instantly via text messages. It adds to the safety and security of your home because you will instantly know who accessed and disarmed the panel.

You can also set the IQ Panel’s camera to capture pictures based on motion detection. For instance, if a user disarmed the panel via Bluetooth, the panel’s camera will take it when someone passes through the door, so you know who remotely disarmed the system. If someone accesses the panel’s settings or tries to change them, the alarm gets triggered, and the pictures of such an intruder(that might be an authorized user) are taken.

You can also peek into the panel camera anytime via your mobile app and record up to 4 minutes of video after the alarm goes off.

7.    Emergency Panic System

It is the best home automation system with emergency panic alarms. Whether your system is disarmed or not triggered due to any issue, you can send manual emergency panic by selecting the type of emergency from the bottom-right of the panel screen. The different types of emergency panics include police, fire, and medical emergency. As soon as a user triggers one of the emergency alarms, the emergency signals are sent to the system provider’s monitoring station.

8.    Smartphone App To Control Your Home Security

The Smart home assistant can be controlled via alarm.com’s smartphone app. The smartphone app for controlling Qolsys IQ Panel is one of the main highlights of the system itself. Whether you want to have an insight into happenings in your home, Bluetooth arming/disarming, get instant alerts in case of emergencies, or monitor your home via visual verification. The Wi-Fi and built-in GSM module let you stay connected to your IQ Panel 24/7, whether you are at home or not.

9.    Automatic Arming and Disarming

Once you are leaving your home, you will arm the system so that the intelligent panel locks the doors, and windows, power off the electric appliances, turn on surveillance, close your garage door, etc., on one signal. Similarly, you will need to disarm everything when you come back by using the IQ Panel’s LCD.

However, the Qolsys IQ Panel has automatic arming and disarming triggered by your mobile phone. You can let your smartphone work for you to tell sensors to prepare the home when you are coming and take care of things once you leave the house.

10. Partitions To Create Security Zones

So you might want to arm certain areas of your home at a time and keep others disarmed. Older sensors wouldn’t let you do it as the technology was not advanced enough. However, with the new Qolsys IQ Panel and home automation system, you can create up to 4 partitions that can be programmed separately. For instance, you left your home and disarmed the living area but want to arm the car garage. You can create two partitions and manage the areas of your home easily.

11. Optional Features

You could enable several optional features and settings for residential consumers. For instance, you can activate a two-way voice microphone and speaker when triggering emergency panic. This allows you to explain the emergency and get the resolution from the monitoring station.

You can also integrate the Qolsys panel into your existing wired sensors and make it a smart system that is unparalleled by anything else out there.

17 Things to consider when buying a Yale Alarm https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/17-things-to-consider-when-you-are-buying-a-yale-alarm/ https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/17-things-to-consider-when-you-are-buying-a-yale-alarm/#comments Tue, 11 May 2021 10:14:45 +0000 https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/?p=5732

Are you in the market for a new home security system? If so, you may be considering purchasing a Yale alarm system. Yale is a well-known and trusted brand in the home security industry, and for good reason. However, before you make a purchase, it’s important to consider a number of factors to ensure you’re getting the best alarm system for your needs. In this blog, we’ll cover 17 things to consider when you’re buying a Yale alarm. From installation and maintenance to cost and features, we’ll help you make an informed decision.

1) Why do I need an alarm system?

This is the most critical question to ask yourself in the first place: why do you need a burglar alarm?

  1. Is it because it is a high-risk property? Well, which one isn’t?
  2. To safeguard the family and possessions on a residential property?
  3. Is it a high-risk neighborhood with a recent burglary?

Your requirement could be related to any of the reasons listed above, but not every security system is a one-size-fits-all solution.

Burglar alarms are used as a first-line defense and may not be the best solution in all circumstances. Therefore, always consult a professional company to determine the best solution to your security needs.

People sometimes end up choosing a security system that does not meet their needs. For example, if your property is in a high-risk area, a standard alarm will not suffice. It would be best to look into some advanced solutions like professional-grade smart intruder alarms that include remote access control and camera sensors that allow you to monitor your property remotely.

It’s best to assess your requirements first and then consult with a security company to find the best solution for your property.

2) Why the brand Yale?

Yale was started in 1868 in America and expanded to the UK as a lock manufacturer and is well and truly a global leader in locks and other door-opening solutions. Assa Abloy owns Yale since 2000.

Yale has a substantial range of wireless alarms, and it has been a strong player in the DIY wireless alarm market in the last decade and more.

3) Yale alarm vs Other Brands

When it comes to home protection, Yale is a well-known brand, and its locks range is second to none. That brand recognition and reputation have helped Yale sell its alarm range, and it is one of the most prominent players in the DIY burglar alarm range.

People choose Yale as their preferred security system because it is a cost-effective solution that does not require a monthly subscription or monitoring charges.

It is always a good idea to compare all of the brands before deciding on an alarm system. Examine the alarm systems’ features as well as the technology they use.

The most popular DIY alarms currently in the market include Yale alarm, Ring alarm, SimpliSafe, to name some. I emphasise ‘currently’ as we have seen several DIY products come and go out of the market.

As DIY alarms do not have to meet some of the higher insurance standards and British Standard grading requirements, they are easier to launch for manufacturers and sometimes more vulnerable to comparable Grade 2 or higher alarms we install. Visonic and Risco are other brands offering more advanced security systems at a lower price.

If cost is a factor in your decision to go with a Yale alarm, we suggest taking a look at the following budget-friendly alarm systems as well.

4) History of Yale alarm

Yale HSA 3000 series wireless alarm was a big seller in the first decade of the 21st century. They came with their most prominent and probably the best range HSA 6000 series. It is still selling strong despite being in the market for over a decade.

Yale 6400 premium telecommunicating alarm is their best alarm. Other models include Yale 6200 standard alarm and Yale 6300 family alarm.

Both HSA 3000 series and HSA 6000 series work on 433 MHz. This frequency is apparently a European wireless alarm frequency and not the dedicated wireless frequency used for alarms in the UK.

Yale tried to enter the professional-grade alarm market with the Yale SmartHome Alarm range in 2013. It met grade 2 standards and was running on 868 MHz wireless frequency. The product wasn’t a big success, and they had to discontinue it within a couple of years.

In 2013, Yale introduced the Easy-Fit Range in the UK with EF-Kit 1, EF-Kit 2, and EF–kit 3.

  • Kit 1 is Yale Easy Standard Alarm
  • Kit 2 is Yale Easy Telecommunicating Alarm
  • EF-Kit 3 is their smart alarm range.

These products are still available in some capacity in the market. However, Yale Kit 2 is their most popular product with a white control panel and a black touch display area.

Yale also introduced their Sync IA range in 2018, and is still widely available in the market. The series has IA – 310, IA -320, IA -330, and IA – 340 alarms. Yale also offers a wide range of safes and offer a DIY range of CCTV systems as well.

5) Which Yale alarm is best?

Yale offers fully battery-operated, bells-only, telecommunication, and smart alarm systems. Despite their decision to discontinue a few product ranges in the last decade due to several reasons, Yale is still one of the most popular and widely sold brands in the DIY security market in the UK.

Yale’s most popular alarm in the last 10 years is Yale 6400 premium telecommunicating alarm. You can use it when you go out and at night and call up to 3 numbers of your choice using your landline at home. Considering the landline is going digital, this system will soon have limited notification capability.

Yale’s new IA range of alarms offers smartphone app connectivity, so that is an excellent option to consider as well. Most popular being IA-330 and IA-340.

6) What communication feature do I need in a Yale alarm?

When selecting a Yale alarm system, you must consider what communication feature you want your alarm to have. The alarm system’s communication module allows the device to notify the user if an intrusion is detected. It can communicate via your landline, broadband, or a GSM network. You can select a suitable communication feature for your Yale alarm based on the needs of your property.

7) Do I need additional sensors with a Yale alarm?

A typical Yale alarm kit consists of the following components.

  • Control panel/ Keypad
  • A couple of PIR motion detector
  • A couple of Door Contacts
  • 1 or 2 External live or dummy sirens

These standard packages are rarely sufficient for most properties, and you may require additional sensors. As most Yale alarms now come with sensors pre-programmed, you need to program additional sensors you purchase.

When recommending alarms, the theory we use is to put one motion sensor in every ground floor room where someone can access from outside via door or window and one door contact per each outside door.

8) What types of sensors are available with the Yale alarms?

Yale alarms come with motion sensors and door contacts. They also do key fobs and smoke detectors as add-on devices. However, they do not offer the full range of sensors provided by professional burglar alarms range – such as shock detectors, glass breakers, carbon monoxide sensors, ceiling sensors, outdoor sensors, contacts, or specialist quad sensors for use in conservatories and sun rooms. Yale’s pet-friendly sensors aren’t as good as professional-grade sensors.

9) How to install the Yale alarm?

Yale alarm kits are do-it-yourself in nature, which means you don’t need a professional installer to install them. It comes with an installation manual that walks you through the process of setting up a Yale alarm. You would require necessary tools like drill sets, a sturdy ladder for internal use, and a tall ladder (6 meters plus) to set up an external bell box at the top of the first-floor or second-floor height.

It is best to hire a professional installer to avoid tampering and damaging the system. You may also end up paying more to have the system repaired.

A professional Yale installer near you can fit a Yale alarm in under 90 minutes, while a DIY user can take a lot longer and, when things go wrong, significantly longer.

In 2020 we carried out over 100 visits to complete partially finished Yale installations and more to check and rectify programming errors.

If you are unsure what to do, give us a call, and our Yale installation specialists can help you with your Yale alarm requirements

10) How can I service a Yale alarm?

Yale does not provide any service plans for its alarm kits. You need to contact a professional company like FHA Security for your alarm’s annual maintenance or repair.

FHA provides yearly alarm maintenance services for all types of Yale alarm kits. You can also ask us for one-off service callouts to rectify any problems you are struggling with. We also carry the most common parts for Yale alarms in our van. Our engineers are all professionally trained and qualified to work on Yale Burglar Alarm.

11) Are Yale alarms insurance approved?

No, Yale alarms are not insurance-approved. Insurance-approved alarm systems are graded alarms that comply with the European standard EN 50131. Yale alarms are DIY systems and are not graded. They meet the CE ratings required for all electrical products.

Always consult your insurance company before purchasing a Yale alarm system, as most of them will ask you to use an insurance-approved alarm system, fitted to PD6667:2017 or equivalent standards by an NSI or SSAIB certified company like FHA Security.

12) What grade are Yale alarms?

There are four alarm grades ranging from 1 to 4, with 4 being the most secure. A grade 2 alarm system is recommended for residential properties. Yale alarm systems, on the other hand, are not graded. All graded alarm systems are professionally installed and in accordance with industry standards.

13) Can I have my Yale alarm monitored by a third party?

If your insurance requires your alarm to be third-party monitored or have police-response with them, you cannot do either of them with the Yale alarm. Non-graded alarms cannot connect to the monitoring stations.

14) What is the average life of Yale alarms?

The average life of a typical Yale alarm is about 7 years, give or take – depending on maintaining it well and servicing it regularly. We have had to replace DIY Yale alarms within weeks due to poor installation, and within the first 2-3 years, lack of service and the alkaline battery discharge damaging sensors.

With Yale refreshing its range every few years, the main challenge with the life of the Yale alarm is the ability to find replacement parts when something goes wrong.

15) How does the Yale alarm work?

Yale’s current burglar alarm range is fully wireless, and all devices communicate wirelessly using its dedicated alarm frequency. The control panel needs a power supply, and some models require a connection to either a landline or broadband router. Everything else is entirely wireless.

16) Does it work with voice control devices like google home?

The Latest IA range of Yale smart alarm systems allows for smart device controls. It can easily connect to voice control devices such as Google Home or Alexa. You can use these devices to control the operation of your alarm system. For example, you can tell Alexa to arm your alarm system. This would help to eliminate the need for manual intervention to arm or disarm the alarm system. It is very convenient for people who are already using such devices in their homes.

17) DIY vs Professional alarms?

When people are looking to purchase a security system, the first question that comes to mind is, “Which system should I purchase? Do-it-yourself or professional security system?”

People are generally perplexed by the vast array of options available on the market. There are a few devices that may initially entice you. For example, people may purchase a DIY product because it is less expensive without thoroughly analysing their requirements. But keep in mind that cheaper is not always better.

Price should never be the only factor when purchasing a home security system. You should always take into account ongoing maintenance, insurance requirements, ability to customise and add specialist sensors.

In our previous article, “DIY vs Professional Security systems“, we discussed the benefits and drawbacks of each type of system in detail. It is always advisable to evaluate each type of alarm and see which one best meets your needs.

Conclusion

So, whether you are thinking of getting a Yale alarm or have bought a Yale alarm or inherited it, give us a call and let our dedicated Yale alarm specialist offer you no-obligation advice and assist you with fitting your alarm. And if Yale isn’t the solution for you, do not worry. We work with many other leading brands of security solutions in the UK.

Burglar Alarm, CCTV or Video Doorbell- Which one should I get? https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/burglar-alarm-cctv-or-video-doorbell-which-one-should-i-get/ https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/burglar-alarm-cctv-or-video-doorbell-which-one-should-i-get/#comments Fri, 19 Mar 2021 10:40:51 +0000 https://www.fhasecurity.co.uk/blog/?p=5475

This is a classic ‘chicken and egg; new egg’ tale!

Wait a minute! Let me explain.

Burglar alarms date back to 1853 when Reverend Augustus Russell Pope patented the first electro-magnetic burglar alarm. And Edwin Holmes made it in his factory in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1857.

CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) is a relatively new technology that was first used in 1942 to observe the launch of V-2 rockets in Germany. Initially, they were created to live monitor and did not allow footage recordings.

Both technologies have evolved significantly since then.

On the other hand, video doorbells are a new entrant that debuted in 2013 with the famous Ring video doorbell by entrepreneur Jamie Siminoff.

So, back to the original question. It all depends on where, why, and how you intend to use these systems.

To simplify,

  • An alarm deters burglars and prevents burglaries.
  • CCTV collects evidence and is more valuable in verifying and providing proof to the police.
  • With a video doorbell, you can see who is ringing your doorbell. You can communicate with them in real-time thanks to the video feature.

To summarise, it relies entirely on your security requirements.

Where should I use these security systems?

I. Business Premises

CCTV systems

CCTV System in Business Premise

A fully functional CCTV system complements retail or commercial properties by effectively stopping distraction burglars and shoplifters in real-time. It enables you to monitor the property remotely as well as onsite using the cameras.

Installing cameras and a CCTV monitor in a strategic location always deters opportunist thieves. However, it may not be highly beneficial if the premises are closed at night. A burglar with his or her face hidden can break in quickly and escape unnoticed. Such cases have remained unsolved.

A remote and live monitored CCTV can still be helpful; however, the high cost of third party video monitoring often prevents most small businesses and residential custodians from implementing it.

Burglar Alarms

Burglar Alarm in Business Premises

On the other hand, an intruder alarm is not as effective as a CCTV system during the day but can be very effective at night. There is one exception for day use, though.

When an alarm system enables chime on doors, the control panel can notify you every time someone walks through the door.

FHA intruder alarms can be set-up to notify users or monitoring stations via various communication channels whenever the alarm is triggered.

A smart alarm will send you an alert along with images and videos on your app to verify in real-time.

On a commercial property, a video doorbell has limited utility. Given the traffic volume, professional-grade access control would be a better solution for a commercial entry system.

On such systems, you can still receive video and remote notifications.

II. Residential Premises

Burglar Alarms

Burglar Alarms in residential premises

For starters, we would recommend installing a wireless burglar alarm. It is still the single most beneficial security solution, providing greater protection against intruders on its own.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to selecting the best burglar alarm for your needs.

As a starting point, most insurance providers will still recommend an NSI or SSAIB certified alarm installed and maintained annually.

A high-quality wireless alarm system that is professionally installed and maintained is your first line of defence against intruders targeting your home.

When is it appropriate to use an alarm system?
  • Always arm your alarm system before leaving the house.
  • When you go to bed at night, you can partially arm your system to activate floor protection.

Some of our systems even allow you to design a complete perimeter defence that protects doors, windows, and other entry points. It will enable you to move freely throughout the house, even during the day, while providing complete security.

You can also customise your alarm system by selecting from a wide range of communication options, smart alerts, camera sensors, external protection, and home automation options.

CCTV

There is a wide range of camera solutions for internal and external use available for residential homes.

Some important considerations to bear in mind.

  • Where will the camera be placed?
  • What level of recording and access are you looking for?
  • Do you want the camera to pan and tilt?

Choose a plug-and-play camera with a smart app for indoors and, if possible, two-way audio with pan and tilt capabilities.

We would recommend a professionally installed and fully customised CCTV solution for the outdoors, such as FHA ones.

Remember that CCTV that does not provide local recording and relies on your broadband connection is not as reliable as CCTV with local hard-drive recording.

A professionally installed CCTV system is a one-time cost solution that will rarely require additional maintenance and will provide complete protection.

When possible, choose products that are secure by design and secure by default. To avoid scary stories like this one about Ring’s home security camera being hacked, always change the default login details on all remote access for your CCTV system.

Video Doorbell

A smart doorbell is a relatively new product on the market that is a useful smart device. The following are some of the key features of a smart doorbell.

  • Motion-triggered notification
  • Push notification through a smartphone app
  • Optional built-in cameras can send live video notifications and support 2-way video communications.

There are numerous smart doorbell devices on the market, some of which are from unknown brands and costs from as little as £20. But, among all of them, the Ring doorbell stands out as one of the best. If you want to watch historical videos, these devices have a variety of subscription options.

Tip: All smart doorbells make use of your home broadband as well as your smartphone. You should only connect trusted smart devices to your broadband, and you should only install secure apps on your phone. The reason for this is that there are security risks associated with hacking. In fact, there have been reports of security breaches in which ring products were hacked.

If you need help installing your wireless ring doorbell, please call us, and we will gladly assist you.
